February Carnival

It's Pancake Day
with a difference!

Lasting from a few days to anything up to week the February Carnival is a time of national celebration with fiestas and parades being held in many of the country's major towns and cities.

You will find festivities taking place in many of the towns and villages of the Axarquia region. By far the largest celebrations take place in the provincial capital city Malaga.

Here for a few days excess in many forms is the order of the day, with the streets and people alike dressed in bright colours and music, dancing, eating and drinking all actively encouraged.

Whilst Spanish celebrations may not be quite so well known as those of the Rio Carnival or New Orleans Mardis Gras nevertheless full advantage is taken of the freedom to party in the build up to the period of Lent - especially as such fiestas were widely outlawed during the forty years of repression from 1937 under General Franco’s rule .
